Top 5 Web Design Trends for 2017

Just like the fashion industry, the digital world follows certain trends. To help you stay on top of the game, we bring you a curated list of the top 5 web design trends to incorporate into your marketing strategy for 2017.

Mobile-friendly design

We’ve covered the importance of being mobile-centric in one of our previous blog posts. The number of mobile users continues to rise, so this is still the most relevant web design trend for 2017. But what we often see in the industry is design for mobile devices first, rather than focusing on beautiful and functional desktop design first and foremost, and then configuring how to make it fully functional on mobile. While our projects have been ambitious, designing in this way has ensured that our design is user-friendly and looks great on mobile. In the case of our clients the Personal Mortgage Advice company Oportfolio, we designed a responsive 6-step website to simplify the mortgage application process for customers who wanted to apply ‘on the go’. The danger of working the other way around is that you end up with a very basic, limited design that may work well on a smartphone but when it comes to desktop, it can look too bleak and you may end up wasting space and missing a functionality opportunity.

Authentic photography

While stock imagery has its perks, there are also some significant downsides. According to research done by the Nielsen Norman Group, web users tend to completely ignore large, purely decorative feel-good images and stock photos of models. Because people are drawn to authentic photos of real people and products. Another benefit of having authentic photos is that you can post them on social media sites like Instagram. It’s a great platform that allows you to showcase the people and the personality behind your brand, building engagement with your customer that feels equally authentic. Posting photos of our own team on Instagram has gained us hundreds of followers in the space of just a few months. We have also seen lots of traffic and attraction on various social media sites for our clients the Bristol-based Italian Restaurant Al Bacio, all thanks to sharing authentic photography and genuine customer experiences.

Video and motion graphics

Like mobile, video is a growing trend that’s here to stay. Having a video on the landing page of your website can increase your customer engagement rate by 80%. This means that production is well-worth investing in, and you don’t have to be in the Hollywood business to create a video that customers want to share. Sometimes just a touch of motion is all that’s needed to make your website look fresh and elegant. We use video on our own landing page because we know what a difference it can make when it comes to web design.

Card design

Think Pinterest, the web platform that made card design go mainstream. When you have lots of information that you’re trying to fit on a single website, card design is the perfect tool to use. And it’s easy to make it work on a mobile device – the cards move and slot around and on top of each other neatly. Check out the news section of our clients the global optoelectronics company Selectronic to get a flavour of card design in action.

Big bold type

Big and bold design is here to stay. In fact, the infographic maker Venngage says that the 2017 trend is defined by louder and brighter colours, bold typography and vibrant duotones, among other design elements. Having a bold type design has helped our clients Nova Primary school and Win Win Property Buyers reach out to more customers and establish a stronger brand identity.
