Hungary for More: The Importance of Purpose

Mission, Vision, and Values as the Cornerstone for Organisational Success

Last week, I had the privilege of visiting the vibrant capital of Hungary once again. This time, I brought along The Purpose Playbook, our flagship workshop designed to connect leaders and teams to their purpose. It was exciting to witness how effectively it translated into a different cultural and organisational context. Regardless of the setting, the Playbook continues to prove its universal applicability, helping businesses and teams define and align their mission, vision, and values to build a foundation for sustainable success.

The Power of a Clear Mission, Vision, and Values

At the heart of every successful organisation lies clarity—clarity of purpose, direction, and identity. The Playbook serves as a guiding tool to demystify complexity, distil it into a compelling narrative and bring teams together in pursuit of shared goals. By crafting a mission, vision, and values collaboratively, teams gain the clarity needed to accelerate their progress and amplify their impact.

A clear mission answers the “why” of an organisation’s existence. It defines the organisation’s purpose in a way that resonates with stakeholders, internally and externally. A compelling vision paints a vivid picture of what the organisation aspires to achieve in the future, while its values serve as guiding principles that shape culture, behaviours, and decision-making.

When organisations lack this foundation, they lose focus, direction, and authenticity. They become reactive, operating without a “Pole Star” to guide their actions. The Purpose Playbook seeks to reverse this by helping teams articulate these critical elements, ensuring they are both meaningful and actionable.

Taking Purpose Global

Reflecting on our journey, it’s encouraging to see The Purpose Playbook gaining traction beyond our borders. Over the years, key voices in our circle have consistently remarked that our methodology has the potential to scale globally. This vision is becoming a reality as more international clients knock on our door, seeking the transformation the Playbook delivers. Each step forward reinforces the importance of having a strong sense of purpose—both for us as facilitators and for the organisations we work with.

Similarly, our Purpose People Podcast has been reaching new audiences, further underscoring the relevance of purpose in today’s world. For instance, just last week in London, I met someone who has been following our podcast reels, proving that our message resonates even with those we don’t directly engage with. Purpose, it seems, transcends borders and industries, uniting people in their desire to lead meaningful lives.

Living with Purpose: A Personal Reflection

Purpose has always been the driving force in my life. It shapes my decisions, relationships, and aspirations. I believe that every name carries a legacy, an association that persists long after we are gone. For some, it’s a legacy of inspiration and achievement—consider names like Billy Graham (evangelism), Jürgen Klopp (gegenpressing in football), or Ayrton Senna (speed). For others, unfortunately, it’s a legacy tied to negative connotations, as seen in examples like Oliver Reed (drinking) or Hugh Grant (prostitution scandals).

For me, my goal is simple: purpose. I aim to spend my years helping individuals and organisations discover theirs. This isn’t about ticking off achievements on a retirement plan. It’s about maximizing our potential and ensuring that we leave this world without regrets, having lived lives filled with meaning and intent.

Purpose as the Foundation of Success

Organisations are no different from individuals in their need for purpose. Yet, many businesses fall into the trap of focusing on methods rather than messages. They invest heavily in tools and strategies without first defining the “why” behind their actions. This often leads to hollow marketing efforts or disjointed operations that lack cohesion and authenticity. A strong narrative—rooted in mission, vision, and values—is what transforms organisations from the inside out.

The impact of The Purpose Playbook is a testament to this truth. Participants consistently comment on the transformation it brings, the clarity it offers, and the renewed sense of focus it provides. It’s not just about creating a document filled with buzzwords; it’s about crafting a guiding framework that informs every decision, initiative, and interaction.

Leadership and Purpose: Lessons from Politics

In recent months, the political landscape has provided a stark reminder of what happens when purpose is absent. Leadership without purpose becomes hollow, and systems begin to serve themselves rather than the people they are meant to uplift.

A vision to cut emissions or reduce spending, while important, is not sufficient as a unifying goal. True vision inspires people to become the best versions of themselves. Without it, a nation—or an organisation—loses its identity, impact, and ability to dream. In its place, fear, division, and blame take root.

Purpose, on the other hand, builds. It unites people around shared goals and values, creating a culture of collaboration and empowerment. Destructive criticism, without a constructive vision, only leads to ruin. This is why I believe every political party—and indeed every organisation—needs its version of The Purpose Playbook. Purpose is not a luxury; it’s a necessity for survival and growth.

The Call to Action: Define Your Purpose

Whether you’re a business leader, an entrepreneur, or a policymaker, the need for clarity, focus, and alignment cannot be overstated. A well-defined mission, vision, and set of values act as a compass, ensuring that every decision and action aligns with an organisation’s overarching goals.

In Hungary, we’ve seen firsthand how transformative this process can be. Teams come alive as they articulate their shared purpose, align their efforts, and chart a clear course for the future. This is just the beginning. Our goal is to bring The Purpose Playbook to more organisations worldwide, equipping them with the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly complex and competitive world.

If your organisation is in need of reinvention, focus, or direction, I would be honoured to join you on this journey. Armed with The Purpose Playbook, we can work together to shape a future that is purposeful, impactful, and enduring.

Purpose as the Legacy We Leave Behind

Ultimately, purpose is what defines us. It’s the legacy we leave behind, the impact we have on those around us, and the meaning we derive from our actions. For organisations, the purpose is not just a lofty ideal; it’s the foundation of long-term success. By investing in a clear mission, vision, and values, we ensure that every effort contributes to a greater goal, fostering alignment, innovation, and resilience.

As I reflect on our journey, from Hungary to London and beyond, I’m filled with hope and determination. The need for purpose is universal, and the potential for transformation is immense. Let’s work together to unlock that potential, one organisation, one team, and one leader at a time…
